The range of electric cars.

Convenient everyday driving.

The range of an electric car provides versatility for everyday driving. BMW electric cars have high battery capacities, thanks to the use of innovative technologies. Clever technologies on board further optimise the car's range. Charge-optimised routes automatically take over charge planning on longer journeys.

1 Whilst we recommend the battery for this car is charged to 80% to help optimise the life of your battery, the electric range figure shown is the WLTP figure after the battery had been fully charged to 100%. WLTP figures are shown for comparability purposes. Only compare fuel consumption, CO2 and electric range figures with other cars tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the starting charge of the battery, accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and car load.

2 The achievable additional range depends on your driving style and the environmental conditions.

3 The recharged range in miles after 10 minutes of High-Power-Charging was determined according to DIN70080 in the WLTP cycle. It depends on the car equipment, individual driving profile, ambient temperature, charging status and the use of additional consumers.

All values displayed in the following analysis are connected to your personal driving and charging behaviour with an all-electric vehicle. These official figures may not reflect real-life driving results, which will depends upon a number of factors such as the starting charge of the battery, accessories fitted, variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load.

Life, in charge: a BMW driver’s view.

Considering making the electric switch but still have some questions? We spoke with Director of BMW Financial Services Ireland and popular economist / podcaster, Jim, about how he overcame range anxiety. Initially sceptical, Jim’s been living with an electric car for over 6 months and regularly travels from Dublin to Dungarvan with no issues with charging. He has complete peace of mind knowing every morning he’ll wake up to a full charged car.

To hear more about Jim’s electric experience, watch the full video below.

How to increase your range.

You can do a number of things to maximise the range of your electric car. An anticipatory driving style is important, in particular when driving on motorways. Firstly, drive in an anticipatory manner on motorways and avoid heavy braking. Simply lift your foot off the accelerator, or apply moderate pressure to the brake. Cool or heat your electric car while it's still charging, and try to use the BMW Efficient Mode.

How to maximise your range and driving style.

With the BMW Operating System 8 or higher, the Efficiency Coach shows you how best to accelerate or coast to drive more efficiently. When you are driving efficiently, the power display will light up blue instead of grey. The range gained with an efficient driving style is shown on the information display.

Utilising max range when driving.

In Efficient Mode, the Max Range function provides greater range certainty. If, for example, an identified charging station cannot be used as planned, the range of your electric BMW can be increased by up to 25%[1]. At the touch of a button and while driving.

When switching to Max Range in Efficient Mode, comfort services such as air conditioning or seat heating, are intelligently reduced. As much energy as possible is directed towards forward propulsion. The Max Range function is available for many fully electric BMW models. Please contact your preferred BMW Centre for more detailed information.

2 The stated values are based on the mandatory WLTP measurement procedure. The real life values depend on various factors, e.g. cargo weight, driving style, route, weather conditions, auxiliary electrical consumption (including air conditioning), tires, battery state of health.

3 The  charging performance depends on vehicle equipment, the state of charge and health of the battery, battery temperature, individual driving profile, use of auxiliary users, ambient temperature, and the charging power provided at the charging station.

4 The recharged range within 10 minutes of high-power charging was determined in accordance with ISO12906 in the WLTP cycle. This, as well as the charging performance, depends on vehicle equipment, the state of charge and health of the battery, battery temperature, individual driving profile, use of auxiliary users, ambient temperature, and the charging power provided at the charging station.
