Hydrogen. The future of mobility: efficient, emission-free when driving, and an uncompromising electric driving experience.

Like a battery electric vehicle (BEV), a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) also has an electric drive – in fact, it’s the same electric motor. The key difference is the energy storage system: instead of electricity being stored in the battery, gaseous hydrogen is stored in tanks and is then transformed by the fuel cell into electric power, which is used to drive the vehicle. The key advantage for drivers: a hydrogen car can be refuelled in 3-4 minutes. It can therefore be used like a combustion engine vehicle – but with all the benefits of electric mobility.

Hydrogen vehicles are powered electrically. To achieve this, a fuel cell generates electricity from hydrogen. Electricity, heat and water, which escapes as water vapour, are the only elements to emerge from this reaction. Hydrogen vehicles are therefore emission-free.

For us, safety comes first. Our vehicle satisfies all the relevant safety standards. Before even starting road tests, we carried out extensive crash tests and fulfilled all the legal requirements at both component and vehicle level. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen meets the same high safety standards as all our other vehicles.
